HARRISON, NJ - March 30, 2014 - The Dayton Dutch Lions (0W-1L-0D) fell 3-0 to the New York Red Bulls Reserves on Sunday evening at Red Bull Arena.
The Red Bulls were paced by goals from Michael Bustamante, Eric Stevenson, and Matt Miazga.
The first half was defined by clutch play from both sides, most notably from Dayton goalkeeper Matt Williams. The former University of Cincinnati standout came away with a number of stellar saves that kept things scoreless at the half.
The second half was a different story as the Red Bulls’ attack began clicking on all cylinders, finding seams in the Dayton backline and taking advantage of set pieces.
The Dutch Lions were not without opportunities of their own, including a close call in the 47th minute as a shot from Dayton defender Taylor Bowlin went wide right. Matt Walker went 1 v 1 with New York keeper Ryan Meara in the 75th, but was unable to convert.
The match marked the debut of several players, including starts for Columbus Crew loanees Kevan George and Ryan Finley. Walker, Ross Friedman, Fifi Baiden, Aaron Schoenfeld, and Joe Broekhuizen would all see action in the match as Dutch Lions Head Coach Sid van Druenen used all five substitutions in the second half.
“Of course this was disappointing, but let's not forget we have only been together for three weeks,” Van Druenen commented. “This is a very talented group and I saw some good moments out there today. Our focus now is on preparing for Charlotte."
The Dutch Lions will again hit the road on April 4 as they face the Charlotte Eagles, hoping to get their first points of the young USL PRO season.
