Dayton Dutch Lions FC eager to finally get win at home
DAYTON, Ohio – The third doubleheader of the Lions’ season showcases the women at 5:30 p.m. and the men against the Wilmington Hammerheads at 8 p.m. Saturday June 23, 2012 at Miami Valley South Stadium (Bellbrook High School).
The women (0-5-1) will once again face the Fredericksburg Impact (4-2-1), after a 3-2 loss on June 14. The Impact struck first in the 12th minute, and the Lions hit back in the 32nd and 38th minutes but the goals were not enough as the Impact went on to score two more goals in the second half.
The DDL FC Men's team (0-7-5) is coming off a two game loss to LA Blues (5-3-2) and look to bounce back at home against the Hammerheads (5-3-4), who will be traveling north for back-to-back games in two nights- Friday against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-6-4) and Saturday against the Lions. Lions forward Gibson Bardsley, first in shots in USL PRO with 32 in 12 games, will set his sights on getting results and finishing the ball. But Bardsley has stiff competition in Hammerhead forward Andriy Budnyy, who in 12 games has six goals (ranked #2), 26 shots (ranked #3), and is tied in 2nd in points with 12.
The Hammerheads also have powerhouse Corey Hertzog, on loan from the New York Red Bull’s until June 30. In just five games, Hertzog has two assists (ranked #7), 17 shots (ranked #10), four goals (ranked #5) and tied in fifth in points with 10. Hertzog, formerly of the Penn State Nittany Lions and MLS’s Generation Adidas, was drafted 13th overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft to the Red Bulls.
The game is the start of a crucial week for the Lions. Winning tonight would finally get them off last place and on Monday the team will travel to Kansas to play in the quarterfinal of the US Open Cup on Tuesday night.
