Wright Brass to Perform at Dutch Lions Home-Opener

Friday, April 15, 2013

DAYTON, Ohio – In recognition of the service and sacrifice given by so many in the Dayton area, the Dayton Dutch Lions FC is extending its partnership with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.  The home-opener against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on April 20 will be highlighted by a salute to the armed forces.  Colonel Cassie B. Barlow, 88th Air Base Wing and Installation Commander at WPAFB will be representing the base at the home-opener.  Discounted tickets to the home-opener are being offered to all military and Department of Defense civilian personnel.  To purchase tickets, please contact Laurie Smalley at 937-344-3478.

Wright Brass will be on hand to perform the national anthem prior to first kick, then regale the crowd with God Bless America at halftime.  Wright Brass is one of four classical chamber ensembles within the United States Air Force Band of Flight.  The group consists of a brass quintet and a percussionist.  A blend of sound and style makes them an entertaining ensemble for all audiences.  Wright Brass has performed concerts, military events, and music symposiums all across the country.

The United States Air Force Band of Flight is one of twelve bands in the Air Force. The band’s purpose is to support the global Air Force mission in war and peace by fostering our national heritage and by providing professional musical products and services for official military, recruiting, and community relations events. Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., Miami Valley Chapter 3, an organization dedicated to supporting servicemen, servicewomen, and their families will be manning a booth to collect donated goods for those who serve.  The items at the top of their wish list include foot powder, trail mix, microwave popcorn, tuna, sweet snacks that won’t melt, and small cans of franks and beans.  Dutch Lions’ fans are encouraged to bring items to donate.

A Frisbee toss contest is also being sponsored by Blue Star Mothers of America.  Fans can get Frisbees from their booth for $1 and then participate in the contest at halftime of the game.  Participants who are able to get their Frisbee to land closest to a target on the field will win prizes from the Dutch Lions.

“Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., Miami Valley Chapter 3, is delighted to participate in the Dayton Dutch Lions’ salute to the military at the opening game of the 2013 season.  BSM Chapter 3 has a three-fold mission of supporting our military, our veterans, and each other.  Our association with the Dayton Dutch Lions and their military salute will allow us to advance each aspect of our mission in addition to promoting patriotism and respect for the military among the youth attending the game.  We are grateful to the Dayton Dutch Lions for the opportunity to join with the soccer community in honoring those who serve at WPAFB,” said Shari Kern, President of Blue Star Mothers of America, Miami Valley Chapter 3.
