Dayton Dutch Lions Women Fall Short in Loss to VSI Tampa Bay

Sunday, July 14, 2013

DAYTON, Ohio –The Dutch Lion Women’s team (5-2-3) played their final game of regular season on Sunday and found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard when VSI Tampa Bay (3-6-1) took advantage of a lackluster Dayton performance, winning 4-1.

Scoring began late in the first half, with Dayton’s Tracy Rymp’s strong shot to the VSI Tampa goal being denied by VSI Tampa Bay keeper Che Brown, who punched the ball back out to Rymp.  Rymp’s rebound found the feet of Tampa defender Kasey Crowe, but Rymp’s tenacity paid off with an assist to Dayton’s Erika Kay who, waiting for the cleanup, flicked to the back post for the 1-0 score.  However, moments later and just before the end of the half, VSI Tampa Bay’s Tori Abnathy drove home a goal for Orlando, sending both teams into the locker room tied, 1-1.

VSI Tampa Bay emerged from the locker room full of fire and found the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute when Sheila Ramos sprinted up the right side of the field and crossed to Tori Abnathy who scored for VSI Tampa. Hungry for more, Shelby Payne positioned herself to receive a well-placed Abnathy corner and pounded the ball into the Dayton goal, bringing the score to 3-1 for VSI Tampa Bay.

The Dayton Dutch Lions remained flat and listless for the remainder of the game, with VSI Tampa Bay’s Shay Bishop capitalizing on an uncontested lane straight to the Dayton goal in the 81st minute for the final score of the game.  VSI Tampa Bay were elated with the 4-1 win.

Coach Sid van Druenen was philosophical about the loss.  “This game put our feet back on the ground.  We still have a couple of games to win and this one reminded us we can be beaten at any time.”  Van Druenen, who made the decision to rest several starters, also cited heat as a factor in the Dayton Dutch Lions’ lack of energy.

The Dayton Dutch Lion’s Womens’ team play the Carolina Elite Cobras (5-4-1) for the W-League Southestern Conference Championship on Friday, July 19th, at the Frank Zink Field/Miami Valley Hospital Stadium in Beavercreek.  The winner of that game will then travel to Bradenton, FL for the W-League Championship sponsored by Nike.
