Dayton Dutch Lions FC Earn Valuable Road Win

Dayton, April 5 2014 – The Dayton Dutch Lions FC beat the Charlotte Eagles 1-0 on the road on Friday, April 4th to pick up their first win of the season.

“After the loss a lot of the guys were eager to get up for the game and wanted to put in a good performance,” Dutch Lions head coach Sid van Druenen remarked. “To win against last year’s USL PRO runner-ups, especially away, is a real accomplishment. We still to need to work on things, but this is a good win to build upon.”

The game started with both teams looking for an opening goal early creating several scoring opportunities. It was Dayton that struck the crossbar first already in the first minute of the game after a shot from Eli Garner was deflected. Charlotte answered back with an attack early when Zak Boggs finished on a half-volley, but the goal was disallowed after an offside call. The game was very even with both teams looking to create opportunities over the wings with Dayton specifically looking for either Garner on the left wing with his speed or Walker in his feet. In the 40th minute Dayton opened the scoring as Brock Granger tallied a beautiful goal off of a corner kick from Ross Friedman. Just before halftime the Lions were close to a 2-0 score when Schoenfeld, who was a constant target point for the Lions, had a great shot from just outside the box hitting the right post.

The Eagles come out the second half looking for the equalizer but the Dayton Dutch Lions FC defense was well organized and seemed to have found it’s shape (after last weeks season opener) and did not give any open chance away besides a blast from Herrera in the 55th that just over the goal. With Dayton Dutch Lions FC on the counterattack they created several great scoring opportunities, the best for Schoenfeld (one on one with the Charlotte goalie that went just wide and a header after a great cross from Vickers) and Eli Garner, who beat his opponent in the box only to see his shot go just next to the post. The Dayton Dutch Lions FC defense stood strong for the last 10 minutes giving Matt Williams his first shutout of the season and the Lions their first victory of the season.

“It was a great game,” Dutch Lions defender Kevan George added. “We finally played together as a team and executed what we worked on in training. The team chemistry is finally coming together.”

The Dayton victory was the first in franchise history against the Eagles with the all-time series now at 1-1-5 for both clubs.
