The Men’s team suffered a 3-0 loss on the road in the second round of the US Open Cup vs Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. After a 0-0 score at halftime the Hounds took the lead in the 57thminute when they were awarded a penalty kick. Neco Brett scored 1-0 and scored another one in the 69thminute of play despite some chances for the Lions. In the 90thminute Jackson Dietrich had the chance to score 2-1 on a penalty kick but his shot went wide to the right. In the 92ndminute Anthony Velarde extended the lead to 3-0.
Head Coach Dan Griest had this to say on the loss: “I am certainly proud of the effort we gave last evening. I think we carried parts of the match and showed that we have the ability to compete at that level. We created some very good chances, that had we been able to capitalize on, could have led to a very different result. It was a tremendous opportunity for us to see where we truly are a group only a week and a half into our season, and I believe we showed we have very strong foundation from which we can build on as we look to repeat as Great Lakes Division Champions this summer.”
The Lions are back in action this Saturday in a double header with the Women’s team. The Women play at 4pm vs AAFC Lumberjills, while the Men play sister club Cincinnati Dutch Lions FC at 7pm.
